The Correspondent
SYNOPSIS
A British Canadian war correspondent uses his Japanese wife’s Communist contacts to gain unprecedented access to North Vietnam where he reveals to the world the wars’ shocking secrets. For exposing American war crimes, he’s targeted by the Nixon administration and smeared as a "Communist dupe". His career in tatters, he’s determined to rehabilitate his reputation and clear his name.
The Correspondent tells the story of the most important war reporter you’ve never heard of: brilliant, iconoclastic British/Canadian Michael Maclear, a school drop out and self taught journalist. In 1969, Maclear was the first western television reporter to get inside wartime Communist North Vietnam. In a series of bombshell documentaries he revealed American war crimes and was the only westerner to cover revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh’s funeral. His interviews with American POWs who angrily denounced the war shocked Americans and made him a target of President Richard Nixon, who tried to destroy his career and very nearly succeeded.
