Xanadu: In Search of Domestic Perfection

Written, and Directed by Andrew Munger

COMPLETED | DELIVERED | 1997

An Ultramagnetic Production

In the 1990’s, a bizarre new suburban phenomenon began to emerge: the “monster” home.

Inspired by faux, historic palaces like Willian Randolph Hearst’s San Simeon (the inspiration for Citizen Kane’s “Xanadu”, and Toronto’s famous Casa Loma, faux Scottish castles, Roman ruins, and baroque palaces, began to dot the barren landscapes of suburban North America as monuments to wealth, success, and ostentation. Xanadu is a cautionary tale which takes you into the lives of contemporary “monster home” families revealing the sacrifice and often heartache that comes with building your “dream house”.
